Scoping reviews aim to rapidly map the key concepts underpinning a research area, by exploring the evidence available to understand more about a particular area of research and practice. These reviews can be undertaken as a stand-alone project in their own right, especially when the area is complex or has not been previously reviewed (Mays et al, 2001). They are a popular approach to reviewing health research to inform clinical practice (Levac et al, 2010).
